Devotional
Before this story, Jesus had spent three years with his disciples. They had lived together day and night, and they had seen Jesus do amazing things. They knew that Jesus was going to become the king of the world. So, the disciples were excited. They wanted to be the king's helpers. They wanted to be rich and powerful and famous. They wanted to have all the best things in the world for themselves. But, Jesus had a different plan. Jesus was planning to die. He was planning to die for his disciples, and he was planning to die for us. He needed to die for us, so that he could get rid of all of our sins. We have all done wrong things. That's called sin. And, after sin, there is always punishment. But Jesus didn't want us to be punished. So, he was punished for us instead. So, Jesus told his disciples, “it's like this.” They were sitting around a table eating dinner. He took the bread and the juice, and he said, “The bread is like my body, and the juice is like my blood.” Then, he broke the bread, to show the disciples that his body was going to be broken. And, he showed them the juice to let them know there was going to be blood when he died. And then, the next day, it all happened. He died for his disciples, and he died for us, because he loves us.
