Devotional
In our story, Elijah was getting ready to go to heaven, and Elisha was walking with him. Elijah was a prophet and a leader. Elisha was his student. They cared about each other like a father and son. So Elijah asked Elisha if there was anything he wanted. Elisha said, “I want a double portion of your spirit.” Let me explain what that means. A long time ago, when a father died, everything he owned would be given to his sons. Each son would receive one part of what the father owned, but the firstborn son would receive two parts—twice as much as anyone else. The firstborn son would also become the leader of the family after his father died. That’s what Elisha wanted. Elisha was asking to take Elijah’s place and continue the special work God had given him to do. It was a very big and difficult job, but Elisha knew it was the job God wanted him to have. So God gave Elisha what he asked for. Elisha became a great prophet, and God used him to do amazing things and help many people. We can learn something important from Elisha: there are lots of things we might want, but the very best thing we can want is what God wants for us.
