Devotional
Our story started with a promise. God promised to help Gideon. Gideon wasn't sure if God would keep his promise. But what do you think -- does God always keep his promises? Yes! But Gideon didn't know that, so Gideon tried some things with a piece of wool. It was silly, but when he was done, Gideon learned that he could trust God. Then God told Gideon to send most of his soldiers home. Gideon had thousands of enemies. So Gideon probably wanted more soldiers in his army to help him fight all those enemies. But Gideon obeyed God anyway. Gideon knew that all he needed was a promise from God. And Gideon was right. God gave him a way to win the battle. All of the enemies were camping at night in one big group. So Gideon told his men to sneak up on the enemy camp at night when nobody could see them. Then Gideon's men smashed some jars, and they shouted and showed their fiery torches. The enemies were so confused that they fought each other, and they ran away because they were so scared! That's how God used Gideon to save Israel. This story was put in the Bible because all of us are a bit like Gideon. God gives us promises too. And when we trust God and obey him, he can do amazing things with us.
