Our Bible story tells us that Jacob had a dream. Now, most dreams are just pretend. Most dreams aren't real. But sometimes in the Bible, people had special dreams. They knew the dream was real. Jacob had one of those very special dreams, and he knew it was a message from God.
In the dream, God made many promises to Jacob. God said He would always be with Jacob and keep him safe. God promised to give Jacob a big family and to bring him home again. Jacob hadn't done anything for God, but God was good to him anyway.
When Jacob woke up, he made a promise too. He said that if God took care of him and brought him home safely, then he would obey God and give Him a gift. But Jacob didn’t want to obey right away. He wanted to do things his own way first. Was this a good idea? Who do you think is smarter—Jacob or God? God is smarter! And God really cared about Jacob. Jacob should have trusted God right away, but he didn't. So he had to learn things the hard way, by making mistakes, because he didn't trust God.
Some people need to learn the hard way. They don't want to listen to God, so they get into a lot of trouble. But some people don't have to learn the hard way. They obey God the first time because they know God is good, and God is smart, and they can trust Him. Those people are the happiest in the end.
