    • Debrief

      • Let's all have a seat to start the lesson.

      • We played this game because it's about following rules. We can only play the game properly if there are rules.

  • Relevance

    • In real life, we can only live properly if there are rules.

    • Rules help us to work together and live together.

    • One of the greatest things about rules is that they help us to know that God is real and not made up.

  • Big Question

    • Our big question today is: how can we know that God is real?

    • In the last two weeks we an`swered this question in two different ways. We learned that both science and history point us to God. And we can also know God from our everyday life.

    • It's always good to have another reason to believe in God though. Another reason will help us when we are feeling down, and it will help other people to find God.

  • Big Idea

    SLIDE 3

    • Our big idea today is that our sense of right and wrong points us to God. We’ll explore this idea with two points:

      • 1. If people make the rules, we have a problem.

      • 2. If God makes the rules, we have an answer for all of our problems.

  • Bible Reference

    • We'll see this in our main Bible verse today.

    SLIDE 4

    • Judges 17:6

      • In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.

    Point 1

  • Our first point is, if people make the rules, we have a problem.

    SLIDE 5

  • Game: Oven Mitt Challenge

    • Instructions

      • Teacher's setup:

        • Set up two tables

        • Provide a pair of oven mitts for each table

        • Provide one or two Hershey Kiss candies per child

      • Let's start this point with a game! It's called the Oven Mitt Race!

      • Let's see how it works:

    SLIDE 6

    • In this game we'll have two teams, and each team will have one table and two oven mitts.

    • The goal of this game is to have everyone on your team unwrap a Hershey Kiss using the oven mitts.

    • After you unwrap one, pass the oven mitts to someone else.

    • If you get really stuck, you can pass your mitts to someone else.

    • When you have unwrapped all the Hershey kisses, you win! Your team can share the candy as a snack.

    • Teacher: form two teams, and have them race to unwrap the Hershey Kiss candies.

    • Debrief

      • In this game, we all had to put on the oven mitts in order to unwrap the candy. Of course it's faster to unwrap the candy if you don't have oven mitts, and it would be faster if we didn't take turns. We could all have swarmed the table and unwrapped the candy at the same time. For some of us, we could have gotten more candy if we just grabbed it all for ourselves and didn't share. But, the rules of the game stop us from just doing whatever we feel like.

      • If we all follow the rules, it's better for everyone.

    SLIDE 7

    • In real life, a lot of people do whatever they feel like, and that leads to a lot of problems.

  • Bible Reference

    SLIDE 8

    • The Bible talks about a time when everyone made up their own rules for life.

      • Let’s read Judges 17:6:

        • In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit

      • And we’ll also read Judges 21:25

        • In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit

  • Explanation

    • It's the exact same verse in two places! This was not an accident. When the Bible repeats itself like this, it's saying, “Pay attention because this is really important!”

    • These verses come from the book of Judges. The book of Judges talks about a time when everyone made their own rules. They all did whatever they felt like doing, and made up their own rules for how to live, and the result was terrible! Everyone became really selfish, and there was tons of fighting and cheating and lying.

    SLIDE 9

    • It’s not good if everyone makes their own rules, because sometimes people make really bad rules for themselves. Some people get really angry, and they start hurting other people. Other people love winning so much that they cheat at games and it ruins the game for everyone. So we all need rules in order to live together properly.

  • Application

    • But the question is: who gets to make the rules? Maybe we can find some people who are really good at making rules. Imagine a group of parents and teachers and scientists and doctors. We can test them and see if they are the smartest and the most caring people in the world. Maybe they can all put their heads together and make some really wise rules that everyone can follow, so that life will be good and fair for everyone.

    • But no matter how good their rules are, they won’t work. This is because if we want life to be fair for everyone, the rich people will have to give away a lot of their money, and they won’t want to do that. The lazy people will need to do more work, and they won't want that. The people with evil plans will need to give up their evil plans and do good things, and they won't want to do that.

    SLIDE 10

    • All those people will say, “why does someone else get to tell us what to do? We're human beings, just like the people who made the rules." All those people will be right. If people make the rules, then nobody can say what is right for someone else to do, and our world will continue to have a lot of problems because people can be very selfish.

    SLIDE 11

  • Discussion Question

    • Let's pause for a discussion question:

      • What is the biggest problem that you see in the world today?

    Point 2

  • Our second point is, if God makes the rules, we have an answer for all of our problems.

    SLIDE 12

  • Game: Suck It Up

    • Instructions

      • We'll start this point with a game! It's called Suck It Up.

      • Teacher: you may want to play this video which will show everyone how the game works:

      • So we will have two teams, and each team will have two bowls. Your goal is to transfer all the Smarties from one bowl to the other bowl, using only a straw. Someone from your team will put a straw in their mouth, and they’ll suck up the Smarties and move them to the other bowl one by one.

      • Once they’ve finished moving all the Smarties to the other bowl, the next person on your team will take a turn, and they’ll move all the Smarties back. So, everyone on your team will have a turn moving the Smarties from one bowl to another. When you all finish, you win!

      • Teacher: after the game, take a moment to distribute the candy so that everyone can have some, and savor the candy together. When everyone is done eating and are settled down, you can start the lecture portion below.

    • Debrief

      • We played this game because it makes us work with two different kinds of rules. First, there's a rule made by human beings. Someone made a rule that you need to move the Smarties from one bowl to the other. But there's a completely different kind of rule that we work with, called a law. We need to work with the law of gravity! This game only works because gravity pulls all the Smarties down. Without gravity, everything would just float away.

    SLIDE 13

    • The law of gravity wasn't made by human beings. Gravity was around before we came along, and gravity will be there no matter what we do, and no matter what we say!

    • The Bible tells us the rules for right and wrong are like gravity. People didn't invent right and wrong, but instead God put these ideas in our heart. We can't get away from right and wrong, no matter what we do or say.

    SLIDE 14

  • Bible Reference

    • Let's read what the Bible says about right and wrong:

      • Romans 2:14-15 (NLT)

        • 14 Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. 15 They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.

  • Explanation

    • These verses tell us some people have never read the Bible, but they still follow what the Bible says, because God has written His laws on our heart.

    SLIDE 15

    • God has given us a conscience, which is our sense of right and wrong. We all know that there is a right and wrong, and we can't escape from right and wrong, just like we can't escape from gravity. But the good thing is, our sense of right and wrong can lead us back to the God who made the rules.

  • Application

    • Maybe a story will help:

    • Has anyone ever heard of the Nazis?

    • A long time ago, there was a group of people who did very evil things. They were called the Nazis. They took over a country, and they started sending soldiers to war. The Nazis were so dangerous that the whole world had to go to war against them. Fortunately, the rest of the world was able to defeat the Nazis, so they were never able to finish their plans.

    • Imagine if the Nazis had won the war. Imagine that they killed everyone else, so that the only people left on earth were Nazis, and they all thought it was a good thing to kill other people whenever they felt like it.

    • Let me ask you a question: Would the Nazis be right to kill other people whenever they felt like it?

    • No! Even if everyone in the world said it was okay to kill people, they would all be wrong. So, right and wrong are not just whatever people say. The rules came from someone who isn't a human being, but who is greater than a human being. Someone who can tell everyone in the world that they are wrong. The rules point us to God.

    • It's a good thing that God made rules like this, because He knows which rules will be best for us.

    SLIDE 16

    • Let's go back to our main verse again.

      • Judges 17:6

        • In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit

    • When everyone did whatever they felt like, the world was a terrible place. This verse gives us a hint at what we need. What we need is a king, who is wise, powerful, loving and perfect. The Bible tells us that king is Jesus, and whoever follows Jesus as king will have an answer to all of their problems.

    SLIDE 17

  • Discussion Question

    • Let's pause for a discussion question.

      • Why might it be a good idea to follow God's rules and not just do whatever we feel like?

    Conclusion

    SLIDE 18

  • Let’s wrap up this lesson by going over the big ideas again.

  • Our big question today was, "how can we know that God is real?" Our answer was, we should be Christians because our sense of right and wrong point us to God. If we know the God who made the rules, we can live the best life.

    Short Film

    SLIDE 19

  • We'll end with a short film! It's called "Soar." It's a reminder to us that we know deep down that it's good to help others. We know this because God wrote his laws in our hearts.

  • Teacher, play this YouTube video

    Ending

  • Teacher: if you have extra time, you can play games, chat, or do a Bible memory challenge.
